Introducing Tons of New TEC!

Introducing Tons of New TEC!
www.techedcollab.org

We've been extremely busy the past couple of months and are excited to announce several new ways to enjoy TEC. From podcasts to upcoming tech field trips, alongside our regular informative events like Privacy PIE, we've got something for everyone. Step one is to join the TEC Discord server!

Announcing the TEC Talks Podcast

We're excited to announce the TEC Talks podcast!

We'll have a variety of content, but the first three episodes are short interviews with working technologists in different sectors of the tech industry. We want to learn more about their jobs' actual daily grind. If you're looking to "get into tech" and want a better idea of what each specific tech sector offers, these podcast episodes will give you a great idea as to what that means.

We'll be introducing longer episodes that deep-dive into other intersections of tech, society and—most importantly—individual people. Future episodes will delve into what it was like to be a woman in STEM during the 1980s (including what has—and hasn't—changed), why policymakers and decision-makers don't know what Facebook is or how it works, and much more.

Bookmark podcast.techedcollab.org and never miss an episode!

If you're currently working as a technologist and would like to be on the show, contact us or email contact@techedcollab.org. Interviews can be done remotely and generally take about 30 minutes.

July 2024 Privacy PIE will discuss Smart Cities

REMINDER: July 2024 Privacy PIE is next Tuesday, July 23, at 6 p.m.

TALK: Smart Cities: What They Know About You

This month Christina Eichelkraut - an unabashed, car free urbanist – will discuss smart cities and their implications for personal privacy.

Much of this technology is incredible, necessary and will certainly elevate and enhance urban life.

But there are still privacy and civil rights implications that often go ignored by nontechnical decision makers who are (understandably) bedazzled by this specific kind of technology’s potential.

Phoenix and Portland are the epicenters of the national smart city movement and receiving a lot of federal funding for implementation, so this discussion is of particular importance to local residents within the Phoenix metro Valley.

Last Slice of Privacy PIE: This 20-minute section at the end of the meeting will show you easy ways to protect your privacy when out in public.

Love Reading About Tech But Pressed for Time? Join the TEC Article Club!

Not everyone has time for a book club, but longform journalism offers a nice compromise. Long articles can frequently be listened to or finished in one sitting. You can frequently listen to audio versions of the article while walking your dog or doing dishes, or read them in snippets of time.

How It Works

Every month TEC will select an article and post a forum to chat about the article on it's Discord server. There will be both async discussion and a once-monthly live meeting. Spoilers are allowed due to the nature of this group.

Read the article and comment when you have time or feel like it. Or join the monthly virtual meeting on Discord.
